Between fen and mountains

Viewpoints, the little yellow train and a bergerie

There were just four of us on our 13k walk today.  We climbed about 500 metres up to viewpoints above the garrison town of Villefranche. It is a UNESCO world heritage site built by the famous French military architect Vauban. It was strategically positioned to defend against any Spanish incursions after the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659. It was never needed. We could also look down on the famous little yellow train that wends its way up to the high plateau of the Cerdagne. A little detour to took us to to a pre Roman bergerie where milk would have been made into cheese and stored.
