Norway Day 4
The weather forecast wasn’t wrong, woke up to clear blue sky, and after a super sunny outdoor breakfast on the campsite we drove to the end of Josterdalen. There is a huge hydro dam on the Styggevatnet lake, at 1050m, and a car park. First we hiked up to the Styggevatnethytta, a little mountain hut, then up to the col, Handespiki. Then there was no path, but a scramble over rocks, followed by a 200m snow field to just below the top. It took about 2.5 hours to reach the top of Sprongdalegge, but it was really worth it, the views were out of this world to the Josterdalsbreen ice cap, the biggest in mainland Europe, as we were just above it. We headed back down the same way, slipping and sliding down the snowfield, then clambering over boulders. We met one person the whole day, a local tour guide who stopped to tell us some fascinating history of the region.
It was really hot back at the car, 27 deg C, we did some shopping at the local shop, then cooked spaghetti carbonara for dinner, enjoying a warm calm night.
