Yorkshire Wolds

Popped across to the Yorkshire Wolds this morning.  We wondered if we would see many butterflies given how few we have seen this year. We started to see some on the valley sides as we approached Wharram Percy ( a deserted medieval village). The most delightful sight was how many were in the chalk quarry near Wharram le Street on the way back to the car. Met a gentleman who was trying to photograph a Marble White but finding it difficult. However he said how much he was enjoying his trip to Yorkshire. The quarry was also home to a huge variety of wildflowers including Orchids..

However the Butterflies had to be sidelined to the extras by this Lapwing chick. I had heard the parents plaintive cries as we walked down the old railway track and it took to the air as we passed by. Two chicks were walking towards us before disappearing into the undergrowth. It was the first time I have ever encountered one. Hope they found their parents!
