Common mallow
Latin name - Malva sylvestris.
Yet another weed uncultivated plant that has invited itself into our garden. I know - it's rather prone to spreading itself around - but you have to admit the flowers are just as pretty as many cultivated plants. And are loved by insects.
Reading up on it before publishing this blip, I discovered that much of it is edible, and it may in fact have been deliberately cultivated as a food plant by the Romans. The French name for mallow is mauve des bois, which is where we got the word for that colour.
Another day spent on our premises. We're not good at going out for day trips/local walks, so I'm going to book another holiday - suggestions welcome.
