The Mullein Moth caterpillar

Today we found some of these  striking caterpillars of the Mullein moth (Shargacucullia verbasci) munching their way through a wild Mullein plant.  Apparently, after spending a few months of eating and growing, the larva goes underground to pupate, and stays as a pupa  for up to  five years before emerging as a moth.
