Burn Baby Burn

Today the shovels got used.  Our friend Maria came to New Zealand from Germany and has never had a hangi.  A hangi is the traditional Maori way to cook food in the ground.  As a family we have been making hangi for about thirty years.  A neighbour was learning the Maori language and wanted to do a hangi so we pitched in to help.  The technique has been refined over the years.  Main blip the fire going well, 1st extra the lovely daughter bringing wood,  2nd extra the forester putting the hangi stone on top of the wood pile, 3rd extra Maria has just lit the fire is waiting to see the flames spread upwards,  4th extra that shovel in action with Andy who has removed the hot stone from the burnt down fire and putting it into the hole the food will be cooked in.  The basket of prepared food is on the side of the shot. last extra the basket of food has been dug up and on it's way to the kitchen.
It was a success.
