Rhyming Signpost
There are three remaining rhyming signposts around Arley. We took this route which reads:
“No cart save on sufferance here
For horse and foot the road is clear
To Lymm, High Leigh, Hoo Green and Mere”
They were composed and presumably erected some time in the 19th century by the great great grandfather of the current owner, Rowland Egerton-Warburton. As they are in reasonable condition (ie legible) they may have been renewed at some point.
Approaching a lady coming the other way we moved over to the grass verge on the right, she likewise on our left.
“I see we are of like mind” she said
“ Not many are” said I
“ I know, it makes me really cross” she replied
And it’s true, there are hardly any people we see keeping to the 2 metre guideline. And some of those seem quite surprised to pass people who are (and take active steps to get out of the way).
