Sally Mair - Loving life

Done!

Today's target was to get the first quarter of the back garden weeded, cleared, hand forked over and ready for the growing season. My target is the area along the wall facing the camera around the apple tree. I'd got nearly as far as the dwarf lilac in the right hand corner when the first of the day's squalls struck. I realised I was going to get very wet if I stayed out so put all my tools away into the garage and headed into the house. A few minutes later the noise on the windows made me look out only to see a heavy shower of large hailstones which ended up lying like snow. See extra.
An hour later though, all had cleared and so I went back outside. To my delight I managed to finish the first stretch and to do the next section too as far as the camellia which hopefully will be in flower very soon. The soil in that area is very heavy clay and today was absolutely water logged, yuck, horribly heavy to work with. I was very pleased by how much I managed to get done. That leaves me only the main flower border to do and then the veg section. My knee coped pretty well, except that it really doesn't like being knelt on. Tough! I'm very glad I have an old garden kneeling stool though, it makes it possible to stand up afterwards!
I popped down to Stockbridge briefly around 6pm when I thought it would be quiet.... Wrong!.... I haven't seen so many people in a long time. We forget how quiet it is where we are, even though we are on a main road. I just turned around and came back again!
25 years since Dunblane today, so many people must have hurt on every single one of those days. I was a P1 teacher too.
I don't think I'll ever forget.
Keep safe and well everybody, so good to hear the vaccine is continuing to roll out.
