The Full Catastrophe
This is my third 'pandemic quilt' made for friends in exchange for a donation to the local food bank or local charity to help those who are suffering during these unprecedented times. I used to make quilts, but stopped many years ago, having saturated the family with baby quilts, wedding quilts and graduation quilts.* I always said that one can't charge enough for a handmade quilt, especially based on the amount of time that goes into them. They are truly labors of love. Perhaps that is why our current pandemic predicament has revived my interest and rekindled some kind of creativity. It is interesting that the style of quilts I have been making during this last year is much more abstract and free form than anything I ever made before....most likely because I have had to rely on my 'stash' of fabric rather than going to a quilt fabric store and choosing from carefully curated fabrics arranged according to color and design. I almost didn't bring that stash with me when we moved. I don't know what moved me to hang on to it...I couldn't possibly have predicted this year and how quilt making saved my sanity back in 2011.
I am hoping that the fact that there isn't another quilt making project on the horizon means that the end of the pandemic is coming.
*extra...a quilt I made for Maya when she was a baby....
