Hay, hay, hay, it's a beautiful day.......

A beautiful day indeed......although a bit hot again. 31.8 degrees C, fantastic hay making weather. A few weeks ago, I thought we had finished all our hay making, but not so. Farmerboy decided to mow our 'piggery' paddock on Wednesday, and once he did it, decided that there was too much grass in there to leave. So, out came the hay making equipment again, and the grass was baled into conventional bales (also known as 'idiot' bales) of hay this afternoon. These bales are perfect for feeding the bulls, or calves in spring - and the best thing is that there is no need for a tractor to move them.

We had a non-stop sort of day today. Once the boys were off to school, I had to do the washing, hang it out, make a sponge for afternoon tea, quick clean up of the house, then off to milk, back home at 12.50pm, quick lunch, farm advisor arrived at 1pm and left at 4.30pm, up to the Cottage to clean it from last nights guests, back home for BBQ tea, out at 7pm to get the hay in, home again, blip photo, now to fold washing, shower and off to bed for a 4.20am start tomorrow morning to milk. Phew!

Our farm advisor, whose area covers the Top of the South Island, told us today that the Murchison area is certainly the worse area for drought, in the top of the South Island. Not what we wanted to hear. We have put contingencies in place in the event we don't get any rain for the rest of March - the first one will be drying off some cows from the milking herd tomorrow. These cows will now be on holiday until they calve again in Spring.
