New Cup
My morning espresso. A few weeks ago, I got a new espresso machine. But the diameter of my cups are too narrow to accommodate the portafilter spout. I set off on a journey to get a new one and eventually chose this little one by ceramic artist, Nell Crawford.
The way I make coffee is reflective of the way I see the world. I’m obsessively mindful. Most things we do in the world are social and political acts. That includes drinking coffee. I want to consider everyone in the production chain from the grower to the roaster. I want small growers, speciality coffee and expert roasters to benefit rather than commodity dealers who get the lowest price possible out of people who live at subsistence levels.
So, to get a hand potted cup from a Scottish artist kind of completed the loop for me. Buying it is a social act too, helping someone maintain a small business.
I'm slightly annoyed that it has a wee smudge of coffee on it. It took an age to photograph though, getting the light and the background right! It was impossible to get the depth of field & background perfect at the same time.
