Lovely Limestone

The human mind likes to count things but it cannot comprehend the number of shells of sea creatures which went into the making of Whitbarrow.  Its massive outcrop is best seen from Sandside looking across the Kent Estuary. It is a sight which always thrills even though I have seen it many hundreds of times.

The very extensive summit is an important nature reserve and the north / south valleys at each side are rich in plants and butterflies.

There are 56 walks described in Wainwright’s guide to the lower outlying fells of Lakeland and yet he says that the walk he describes on Whitbarrow is the most beautiful in the book.
And he is right
