The Roman way.

Before barbed wire fences, the Romans used to keep their stock in the fields with hedges, and a newly laid hedge is a work of art.
Like dry stone walling, we must make sure that these crafts are kept alive, and passed on to future generations.

We met the man who has been laying this hedge at our local Country Park.
He is retired in his late 60's and is one of the many volunteers, who help look after the park.
He says he does it because it keeps him fit, and he certainly takes a pride in his work.

After trimming,you cut part way through the branch near ground level and lay the remainder towards the horizontal along the course of the hedge.

I didn't know that there are over 12 different styles of hedges made like this. This is called the Midland style. Used to keep cattle in. The Yorkshire style is more dense, as it has to keep sheep in.
I have just read that a hedge is a haven for up to 600 plant species, 500 insects, 65 different birds, and 20 smaller mammals.
Much better than a barbed wire fence!

Glorious weather again! Spent the afternoon gardening. Such a joy to be back outside again. Even had a cup of tea sat out side.
Don't think this good weather is going to last though.
