The Shwedagon Pagoda, Rangoon
No visit to Burma is complete without a visit to this Great Dragon Pagoda, also known as the Golden Pagoda, whch was completed in roughly its present form in the late 18th century.
75% of Burmese people are Buddist and religion remains a very, very strong influence in their lives
This pagoda is the holiest shrine in Burma. Sited on a hill in a large park, the stupa, the bell shaped structure, dominates the city. It is 300 feet high and covered in gold.
In my blip it appears, partly obscured, on the left side. A classic, picture post card shot of it would have been taken from a distance just showing the stupa rising up from its hill, but there is much more to the site than just the stupa, as I hope my blip shows. Incredibly ornate buildings and shrines, mostly gold covered, crowd around and encircle the base of the main structure over a large area, complete with huge statues of the Budha and mythical beings.
I have to say that this is the most impressive man made structure I have ever visited. Quite fantastic!
