Diary of an Edinburgher

By LadyMarchmont

Autumn leaves?

Archie’s busy diary was clear today, so we decided to go for a walk. Where to? Hills and trees? Or coffee, ice cream and sights. Guess which I chose. (Archie had no vote, and JR is easy.)

Our walk through the Meadows was badly timed. The place was FULL of school kids swarming into every food joint within a mile radius of their (private) school. Though there were lots of them, they were not the unruly mob from the school near us. They were walking without shoving each other. They were talking quietly, not yelling. And as far I could hear, their conversations contained no swear words. And they formed orderly queues.

Fortunately, our favourite cafe is too healthy for them, so we got a seat outside (our - and Archie’s - preference) at Kauai, and ordered coffees on my phone.

We walked down the Mound and through the Gardens. I had hoped to see autumn leaves, but most trees were not quite ready, except the new ones along at the other end, by the fountain. Though we did spot this fine crop of ‘shrooms.

We continued back round to the Grassmarket. Oh look! Mary’s Milk Bar is open. Ice cream is always welcome - even on a cold day.

A much better step count than yesterday (which wouldn’t be hard) - 9,577.
