Dungeness

We are staying for about a week on the Dungeness peninsula on the South coast of Kent, as a base for touring Kent and East Sussex. This is the most famous house in the area - Prospect Cottage, the home and garden created by artist and filmmaker Derek Jarman.

Shortly after arriving I went for a walk to take some photographs of this remarkable place.  It is reputed to be the UK's only desert, but that is an urban myth as about 21 inches of rain falls each year. My walk was well-timed, as about 1 of the 21 has fallen since I got back.

Dungeness is Europe's largest shingle beach, where walking is made easier by a series of stone paths. There are lots of characterful small cottages but the construction of new ones is no longer allowed.

I will spend many happy hours photographing the area but two local features are the nuclear power stations, one of which has closed, and the Romney Hythe and Dimchurch (miniature) Railway.
