Dancing on The Ceiling
Ever wish you’d never started something? I’ve been meaning to replace the hideous “eyeball” type downlighter in our bathroom for many years now, but the problem was finding something that could cover the large hole that the downlighter sat in.
Thought I’d cracked it when I spied a light in John Lewis which said it was wide enough. Unfortunately, the measurement on the box was the overall diameter and the bit that actually attaches to the ceiling is 1cm too small!
Nevertheless, I was committed by now so accepted that I would have to fill the hole in the ceiling to give the light something to screw into. Plasterboard wouldn’t be strong enough so I used a batten and some MDF to create what you see in the picture.
Next step is to fill the gaps round the edge and then generally smear the filler around to try and replicate the texture of the rest of the ceiling - thankfully we’re dealing with artex and not smooth plaster here! Finally, I’ll paint the repair - and the rest of the ceiling so it matches (it’s a very small bathroom so won’t take long!) When the fully assembled lamp is in place, it should hide pretty much all the insert anyway, but I’ll feel better knowing that what’s underneath is as invisible as it can be. Pictures of the finished repair and installed light to follow in due course.
