18th Century Gate Closer

Dear Diary,

John came yesterday to begin cutting back the garden.  He also installed a new post for my cannonball gate closer.  These became popular after the War for Independence in the late 18th century.  I saw one when I visited Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia many years ago.  My post had rotted out but now it works again.  Hooray for John!  Our gorgeous Indian Summer weather continues.
