Spare a few coppers?
My butterfly books (and I have lots of them) all tell me that, even during the peak of the flight period, only a few Small Copper will be found on the wing at any one time. My own experience backs this up - hence my blip on Sunday when I saw five and my surprise at reading recent reports of people seeing ten or twenty on the Downs. Conditions must be near perfect for them as I had my own encounter this morning, finding 27 Small Copper all within two or three hundred metres along one chalk path. Here's one of them on Devil's-bit Scabious. Thanks for the stars and hearts for yesterday's Brown Argus. I think it is my favourite butterfly photograph for this year.
