Butter-and-eggs
The spaniel and I went over to Beachy Head this morning to look for migrating butterflies - particularly Clouded Yellows- but the wind had swung around from south to east making it unlikely that any would arrive today. Many of the chalk Downland flowers are finished now but Yellow Toadflax (also known as Wild Snapdragon or Butter-and-eggs) is still going strong. It grows very short here on the thin dry soil, perhaps 10-15 cm, instead of the 70 cm that might be typical elsewhere. So we didn't find Clouded Yellows but we did see something in the same colours.
