Nature Diary... Friends who Care

The gentle little butterfly lovingly sat on Famous Frog’s shoulder and whispered something in his ear. Famous Frog sat there looking both dignified and determined.
“Nothing’s the matter” he croaked, “I’m just taking a big, fat, break is all”.
The gentle little butterfly sighed and said “Ok. I’ll just sit here awhile if you don’t mind”.
“Please yourself” said Famous Frog.
The silence between them was perhaps a little strained but they’d been friends for a very long time so it was ok. Then something strange started to happen. Without a word having been spoken Famous Frog sat a little more upright and opened his mouth as if to speak, but no words came out. It was the gentle little butterfly who broke the silence first.
“I didn’t want to compete either” were the words whispered in Famous Frog’s ear. “Im too old and too frail now and although I’d love to compete I think I’d let my team down”.
Without him moving at all a tear fell unbidden from Famous Frog’s eye and landed next to the gentle little butterfly.
“I feel the same” he croaked. And together they sat quietly, each with their own memories.
Suddenly the same thought struck both of them and they both straightened up, each took a deep breath, looked into each other’s eyes, and started to laugh.
“Let’s just go and join in anyway” was the same thought they’d shared. “Let’s just enjoy it, be with our friends, and have a good day”.
And with a nod of agreement, a hop and a skip, and a flutter of gentle wings, they went off to the sporting venue feeling younger, feeling more confident, feeling more like having some fun, and definitely feeling like somebody cared. And what a difference that had made...
