Diary of an Edinburgher

By LadyMarchmont

I took a notion. Twice...

I was up and about quite early, as the boiler man was coming ‘between 8 and 12am’. Actually he came about 9am. Archie went even crazier than usual when he tried to come in, I think because he was wearing a red jacket, the same as his mortal enemies - the posties! But as soon as he got used to him, he wouldn’t leave him alone, rubbing his head all round his legs. I think he smelt the chap’s own dog.

As I was perusing the online news (STUFF, actually - NZ news) I spotted an article about an old lady and her famous scones. The recipe was there. I took a notion to make some! I have, on occasion, taken such a notion, but it never eventuates. However, today it did! And they were rather good. Even though we didn’t have any cream.

It can’t be that easy to make good scones, because as often as not, I am disappointed when I buy one in a cafe. Mostly, the butter is too hard, and the scone just crumbles. So I was pleasantly surprised enough to offer some to the neighbours, which saved us eating too many (three each).

The day was sunny and showery. JR took Archie out to the Links and in another sunny period, I took a notion to snip more of the hedge, which involves standing at the top of the big wobbly ladder. I think I alarmed quite a lot of passers by, with at least one offering to do it for me. I also took a notion to send for a one handed, battery powered, hedge snipper. I had a lightbulb moment and realised that if I keep the wee shoots popping out of the top snipped back, I will not need to do a major hedge trimming job every couple of months or so.

Watched ‘The Luminaries’ last night. Mind you, I gave up on the book, so I don’t hold out much hope for sustained interest. But apparently the TV series is nothing like the book. Worse? It’s on tonight again, so I’ll give it another go...
