Diary of an Edinburgher

Modern art?

We were promised a very warm today, but it didn’t eventuate. Though it was pleasant enough to be out and about, still with a cardie on.

The car got its first service (£90 for nothing much done), JR dropped the car off at the garage, went to the gym, had a haircut, then when Archie went out with Elizabeth, we popped out for lunch. We went to the Modern One Art Gallery. Haven’t been there for ages, but there's always a nice selection for lunch, and then a browse round the exhibits.

We looked at all the 'modern art' and most of it was, well, puzzling. Why is it hanging there when it's actually just a mess? Who decides which mess is worthy of being framed and hung in a gallery? Possibly even bought for a huge sum of money.

My favourite was the splodges and dots covering a huge panel, with several big lumps of - yes - elephant dung!

The blurbs beside them were the best bit. The elephant dung was 'an ironic signifier of Africanism, but also as a way of introducing ambiguity into what are in effect paintings of sensual, decorative beauty...'

Another good one was the two wires across a corner of the room. One beige, one blue. Brilliant. Wish I’d thought of that.

But the visit was rescued by the Schools Art Exhibition, which was well worth seeing. Proper art.

Here's Archie in front of one of the many 'Oor Wullies' around town. They're painted up for charity, but I find them rather grotesque. Archie looks suitably embarrassed. (Photo by Elizabeth)
