Don't Fence Me In

My Dear Princess and Dear Fellows,

The tradies were round early today, around 8am. They took a look at their work from yesterday and made faces at it.

You know the sort of faces. The sort that are going to cost you money.

So anyway. As you know, our garden slopes steeply away into a gully. The tradies reckoned that when our house was built, our garden was basically constructed out of the dirt from our house foundations, shored up by nothing.

"If we put this fence up," they said, "your garden will just disappear down the hill."

It was a fair point. They then used the dreaded words "retaining wall". Which sound expensive.

"How much?" we said.

"Between 2 and 4k," said the chief tradie.

That's not too bad. I was expecting a lot worse. So we gave them the go-ahead and they spent today with an enlarged crew, building their wall, pouring the concrete and putting in the fence posts. I am really very impressed by how quickly it is all happening. They think everything will be finished off by Wednesday, with our garden still in place.

The cats were not impressed of course. But they do not yet appreciate that this is all for them.

S.
