Love on a balcony
Continuing my research into the life of Gordon's grandmother and her family, I unearthed from the depths of my computer scans I made a few years ago of a large set of postcards that Gordon's sister found in an album amongst her grandmother's things. I found out that they were cards which the six siblings sent to each other when they were away from home, working in service or on farms during 1906 and 1907. I suppose to these young people the postcards were the equivalent of emails, text messages etc. The extra picture shows what the album pages look like.
Their grandmother was obviously collecting them as pictures for her album, but to me it's the messages that are fascinating. Trying to piece together who sent what to whom and why has been a lovely puzzle that I've been working on today. A real bit of social history.
