Panic on the streets of Kendal
If there was a global diarrhoea epidemic, then I would understand. There isn't but the aisles at Asda have been stripped of toilet roll regardless. (Ten miles away, in Kirkby Lonsdale, Booths' shelves remain stocked as usual.)
The shelves that usually contain dried pasta have also been cleared by shoppers who have evidently been led to expect food shortages in the near future although there doesn't appear to be an associated stockpiling of accompanying sauces.
I mentioned all this on Twitter and my friend Glenny replied that "Behavioural expert on telly just said that people tend to buy something that has a practical use in these situations, irrespective of whether said thing is linked in any way to the emergency." so maybe that makes more sense of it.
I don't know what to think or whom to trust when it comes to coronavirus, to be honest. I would disregard most of the press, anyway, and I certainly wouldn't take anything Johnson says at face value. I'm not even sure I understand the numbers, which seem on a par with bad season of 'normal' flu. The Minx does seem concerned, though, and I do respect that. I'm just not sure what to do about it, apart from not stockpiling toilet roll and dried pasta.
