What I didn’t see today

I went up on the moorland fringes today. It was a nice morning except for a strong wind. I didn’t see Curlew, Snipe, Red Grouse, Meadow Pipit, and Water Vole, to name but a few. Serves me right for having too high expectations. If it hadn’t been for a Skylark ascending to check on me, I would have been disconsolate.
