Losing their Marbles

In the old days before upper class English men went around plundering other countries artefacts, these sculptures were part of The Parthenon in Athens.

Then at the beginning of the nineteenth Century, the 7th Lord Elgin who at the time was British Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire thought he'd take them back to England for 'safekeeping' from the invading Turks.

After a time the British Crown bought them of Elgin and and ever since, 
'The Parthenon Marbles' or "Elgin Marbles' as they used to be called, have been on public display in The British Museum.

I remember reading Arianna Huffington (then Stassinoloulis) campaign to repatriate them in the 1970's.

Now they have become part of the Brexit deal and Arianna must be delighted.

There were news crews outside this morning.

This is my favourite piece, a horse from the chariot of the moon-goddess Selene. I will post extras as I process them. I love the way the sculptor used flaws in the marble to add drama.
