Drakensberg walk
Our breakfast was carried across the horses’ paddock by 3 women, on their heads, to the main cottage. We had fruit and yogurt, a kind of quiche filling, fried aubergine slices, tomatoes and breads as well as nice coffee - such a treat.
. I was very nervous about the walk though I had no intention of doing the 22km gorge one. However once Warren said the temperature would go up to 35 degrees a few others decided they wouldn’t do it. Then Warren said he wouldn’t advice anyone to attempt it so we’d all to the Tiger Falls walk of 10km in the opposite direction. It was a steady climb up about 1000ft with stunning views of the crags on the Drakensbergs and of the highest mountain in South Africa looming above. We reached an altitude of 1800m. The route down was steep to Cascades where we had a paddle. Taurai had kept me company at the back and told me about his family. Then it was a short flat walk to the bus which we reached just in time before the thunder.
Apparently a group attempting the gorge walk turned back as the heat in the gorge got up to 40degrees which is over 100f I think. Although our walk was a climb there was a gentle breeze which was very welcome. I did 16000 steps.
After a late lunch on our return we had a swim in the beautiful infinity pool as the sun reappeared. There doesn’t seem to be anyone else staying here so it is very peaceful.
