Rubber production
After hand milking the cow, I went on a walk through the pineapple and rubber plantations. I visited the company houses that the workers live in three very basic rooms for the whole family. It takes 25 trees to produce one rubber mat that would fit in the well of a car. The trees can be bled once every two days. A whole oil drum full of latex only has a value of £40. We visited the sewing workshop in the village where the women were busy at work. They make 100 bags each per day that are destined for supermarkets. They get one rupee for each bag produced so that makes a daily wage of about £1. One of our group bought a lovely long cotton dress for £4 from the shop of a seamstress. It just brings home the point that we should be paying more for our clothes.
