Sculpture
This sculpture, in a median strip in a parking lot by the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts, was wonderfully lit and quite dramatic as we drove out after a wonderful evening with David Sedaris. I tried to find out more about it without success, but I think it is part of a larger sculpture garden which has just reopened after the 2017 fire, which damaged the building and destroyed some of the sculptures.
Sedaris read from his books, made fun of political correctness, and of his audiences and the questions they asked him when having their books signed. He is known for his New Yorker stories and his observations on National Public Radio's 'This American Life'. He has a voice that defies description and makes his delivery all the funnier and a dry wit that is hysterical. He had his audience of young, old, gay and straight laughing from the moment he opened his mouth. and continued on through the evening with an unabridged, rather raunchy humor not generally revealed in the New Yorker or on NPR.
He had been sitting behind a table in the lobby signing books and we commented on the fact that he was wearing a dark suit, white shirt and tie...pretty sober attire for a gay man given to a less formal look. I don't know how he walked to the lecturn without revealing his unique treatment of the formal business suit. When the lights came up at the end, he stepped out to reveal that the pants of his suit had been deconstructed into a sort of skirt of dangling ribbons of fabric and the sober black jacket had a large piece cut out of the back. Pure Sedaris...totally inexplicable yet very funny.
The only picture I took today was of the roofing crew installing the first of our solar panels. They seem to have a lot of fun at work, laughing, bursting into bits of song and scampering all over the roof, but they got quite serious as they did this*. Not only that, but it was blessedly quiet for a couple of hours as they concentrated on the task.
It must be because it is Friday, but they seemed to be having an especially good time as they tidied up, giggled, meticulously swept and blew away the sawdust and grit and packed up their truck. At some point today they hauled away the dumpster in front of the garage and one of them even took the old rusty shelf unit we were going to take to the dump once we figured out a way to get it there. After all the cars trucks and chaos, our driveway and garage is now our own again...at least for the weekend...
