"A Des Res"

I enjoyed another peaceful walk through the old forest this morning as the adjacent forestry work has ceased for the week end. The wood is full of really old tree stumps which have weathered in different ways depending on their surroundings. This one was carrying less moss than some and so is probably less ancient, but it is thick with cast off pine needles and showing signs that new growth is itching to take hold. Meantime it is obviously a table for a squirrel who has been untidy - or environmentally friendly - and left his chewed pine cone for others to enjoy and as I knelt down to take the shot I wondered how many wee insects were proudly calling this hummock "home"'.
