DAY SIX: Cruising the Choptank River

Dear Diary,

Last full day in Maryland and it was another beauty. Gorgeous blue skies and calm winds so a perfect day to for a cruise along the Choptank River in Cambridge, Maryland in the sweet little boat the Snug. We toured the harbor and then headed to the Trappe Creek to gawk at the million dollar homes. Henry did a splendid job navigating the wee Snug as Rick piloted the boat. I, as usual, hopped from side to side photographing. That is an osprey nest on the limb of a log.

After lunch, we drove out to see the site where the Brodess Farm was, where Harriet Tubman was enslaved and from which she escaped. Then, we saw the little Bucktown VIllage Store where Harriet had her first act of resistance. Another slave made a break for freedom and Harriet was ordered by the owner to stop him but she refused and when the owner threw a 2 pound iron weight at the slave it hit Harriet instead, cracking her skull. She would suffer from epileptic fits the rest of her life but it put her squarely on the path to freedom and to becoming the “Moses of her people”.

Flying back to Boston today but what an amazing trip I have had! The movie, “”Harriet” comes out on Friday and I will try to see it. It will have so much more meaning now that I have seen where it all took place. Feeling very blessed today.
