Unfortunately is not easy in the photo, to see the dozens of Barnacle Geese on the mudflats, nor the Pink-footed Geese flying over the point in the distance. After a very informative talk about Geese we watched out for the expected thousands to arrive but they disappointed us although we had a very good display of bats as the light faded. In the last few days there have been hundreds passing over the house and we were told how to differentiate the kinds of geese by their calls if they are far away.
Aberlady Bay is an important resting and refuelling stop for them especially in autumn after their long flight from the Arctic Circle. Extras According to GPS geese frequently fly the 900 kilometres from Iceland to Aberlady in about 14 hours at speeds of over 60 km/ph so it is no wonder they need a good rest before continuing, perhaps to fields nearby, locations in Scotland, the Solway or even Norfolk. Although it was disappointing to see only a few Greylags arriving and the Barnacle and Pink-footed geese in the distance, we have often witnessed them landing in the bay and am sure will do in the near future again. It’s a marvellous sound and sight.
