Thursday morning

Eymet is a good example of a Bastide town, built around an arcaded central square - Place Gambetta. Around the square is a wide range of rough-hewn stone buildings and timbered medieval houses, in the centre a rather large fountain.

On Thursday mornings the town is taken over by a market. When Gordon went down for the bread this morning, they were just starting to set up. By the time we walked along a bit later, the place was thronging with stalls and people. My picture shows the Place Gambetta, which is a relatively quiet respite from the rest of the town. The stalls cover the outer square and spill out into the surrounding roads, each double-flanked with stalls. It's an amazing transformation and attracts a lot of people. Many English people live around here and English can be heard everywhere - and if, amongst all this wonderful produce, they should crave something of home . . . (see extra)

We bought the few things we wanted and then returned to our haven of peace and quiet. Lunch in the sunshine, lots of reading done, Gordon made use of the pool and is now making use of the excellent barbecue . . . as well as dealing with an artichoke, drinking a glass of Bergerac Rosé and watching the cricket on his iPad.
