Wallington

I took Joan to Wallington this afternoon. We got there just as a tour was starting. It was a talk about the owners and we were walked round the perimeter of the house while the guide talked. It was quite cold in the blustery wind. The Trevelynes were Fabians and Socialists unlike our current MP who has married into the family. She is a Boris supporter and a Brexiteer and a chum of the Duke. Enough said.

We enjoyed the interior. There were frescoes by William Bell Scott depicting historical events in Northumberland shown in the blip. I was interested as he set up the art school in Newcastle and #3 daughter once lived in a flat with a blue plaque where he’d lived. He brought lots of the Pre-Raphaelites to the area.

Tonight Linda and Colin came to eat with us. I made a nice starter comprising chicory, bacon, Roquefort, toasted hazelnuts and pears with a pear aioli. Then we had fish pie. The pudding was gooseberry fool with elderflower cordial.

It’s been a pretty full on few days!
