Diary of an Edinburgher

Fringe evening

We went to Braidburn Valley Park today for a change. Nice path all the way round - no mud, river for Archie to paddle in and have a drink, and plenty of benches if when I get tired. Also plenty of rubbish bins for poo bags.

The burn was in full flow, a lot deeper in places than I’ve seen it. But Archie was careful - he went in for a drink only where he could climb out again. Though JR was ready to leap in if necessary. But he did play 'fetch' for quite a long time!

It was lovely and warm and sunny while we were there, and I assured JR it wouldn’t rain, so they walked home while I got the bus. Then it poured, so we all got wet.

I had a snooze till it was time to go out to our afternoon Fringe Show. Hazel, our neighbour had been and raved about it. We went early for a bit of a snackeroo in George Square - a delicious pie, then our favourite crispy dumplings. Also a very good flat white (£2.50).

Our show was in the McEwan Hall, where graduations are held. I've never been in there and I was looking forward to seeing the fabulous interior, but it was covered up, mostly, for the Fringe shows. We saw Backbone - a 'high-octane spree of physical virtuosity'. The show was fantastic. The music (two chaps - a brilliant drummer, and a chap on keyboards/electric violin) and lighting too were superb.

The whole university area was mobbed. There was a band in the central seating area, and a huge group of enthusiastic 'silent disco' dancers came shimmying through the crowds. I couldn’t resist a lemon and sugar crepe. The eateries (and bars) were doing great business!

Archie assured us that he didn’t bark while we were out.
