St Andrew's Parish Church.
Today I walked through the village of Chesterton, past the church, across the cycle/footbridge in yesterday's entry, then back home along the river bank, crossing Green Dragon (pub) footbridge. A pleasant round trip in beautiful weather again. This church has a long interesting history. There is a list of Rectors from around 1200 and as the Manor of Cestretone, as it was then known, belonged to the King, there was no Lord of the Manor to lead the village. The church is believed to be a subscription church like many others in East Anglia, built by the efforts of the villagers, the residents at that time being 'villeins or serfs' who worked for the Governer of the Castle of Cambridge. Only the castle mound remains today.
