Itchen Bridge

This bridge over the River Itchen in Southampton is the most striking of a number of river crossings in the city because of its sheer size.
It provides a road link from the central part of the city to the eastern side of the city, and opened in 1977, is still a toll crossing.
The river beneath though provide sheltered waters for sail training from the Southampton Water Activities Centre.
I am old enough to remember the craft of a different type which once lived on these waters. The river crossing was by twin chain ferries before the bridge was built.
