Unfolding
Whilst walking across a field this morning I spotted a large burnet moth flying around - it was quite mesmerising watching the bright red wing spots ‘flashing’. As it flew around I happened to notice another one on some grass nearby and as I approached I could see that it was still emerging from its pupal case - and the wings were still unfolding.
An absolutely mesmerising sight so I stood for ages watching it stretch its wings out fully. You can see the pupal case and cocoon just in front of it.
I do wish that I had had my macro lens with me, sadly I only had my 28-300 and this is quite a severe crop. It does look quite nice in large and there are a couple of extra shots too.
A great start to the day to witness this event.
