Tongland Abbey

Today's the day ………………………. for an update

More digging on the Tongland Abbey Dig today - and one of the pits has really gone down a long way.

Last week, the outline of one of the major Abbey walls was just visible running the length of trench - and so John and Joe were in there today trowelling away.  On one side of the wall, there is a very marked red, sandy layer.  It's very possible that this could be where the Cloister was because it would have had a floor covering for the monks to walk on.  And it would fit in very nicely, when you take into consideration the position of other walls found during previous digs, that this might be the South Cloister. 

Slowly, slowly a plan is emerging which makes it all very exciting ……………...
