Stuning Vermont from the Memorial

Cruise America seem to have given up on us. No contact today from them today. However, this is more ammunition to use against them in the final reckoning!

Never mind, we thoroughly enjoyed today in the clear warm sunshine which didn’t seem that likely given the heavy rain which cascaded on our roof most of the night.

Grey skies gave way to a lovely day exploring Bennington, Vermont. It’s always a tension when you have to take your shell with you and find somewhere to park. With the help of local knowledge we were able to tuck the vehicle safely away in a corner of a car park. It certainly takes two the manoeuvre these giants. One to drive and one to spot.

A coffee first, then a walk to the Battle of Bennington Memorial Tower in Old Bennington. A lovely stroll to this magnificent monument to a decisive battle in the War of Independence where the Colonials won their first significant battle against the British.

A massive monument was built, towering over the old town. A lift takes you to the viewing platform which gives tremendous views of the surrounding countryside especially the Green Hills for which this state is known.

We had lunch before being whisked to the top of the monument. Talked to some very interesting guides as well a other visitors, all of whom were extremely friendly.

From the monument we travelled to the Apple Barn and Country Bake Shop were we bought craft IPA and some maple syrup for which this area is well known. We avoided the many other sugary delights that were on offer.

Covered Bridges are very common in Vermont, there are three in Bennington. Our RV is too large to use them but there was a pullover just large enough to park so that we could look at the Paper Mill Bridge. Apparently they were covered to protect the wooden roadway from rain.

We went to find Lake Parvan but ended up at the wrong parking lot so gave up and called in al Walmart for the last bit of shopping for this part of the trip. Travelling on to Waterhouses Park tomorrow along the scenic VT100 road.
