Green-veined White

Today's the day ……………………. to be common

This butterfly was kind enough to come to rest on a clump pf Polygonum bistorta  and stay there long enough for me to get this picture of it.

 I think it is a Green-veined White - a common butterfly of damp grassland and woodland - that can be found from spring through to autumn. The so-called green veins on the underside of the adults are, in fact, an illusion created by a subtle combination of yellow and black scales.

Despite the fact that it is one of the most widespread species found in the British Isles, I think it's rather beautiful ……………….
