Nest building
We called in at the RSPB Bempton Cliffs Seabird Centre this morning. There are so many birds, it is quite mesmerising to watch them. Only a few Puffins and those were mainly hidden away in the cracks in the cliff, but it was the Gannets we had come to see. One of Gordon's favourite birds, they are most stylish, and wonderful to watch as they glide through the air. There are only a few places in England where they breed in significant numbers and here is the largest population.
It is nest-building time and I loved watching this one working very hard getting the nest just right. This is really a sequel to ValC's lovely picture of a week or so ago. The first extra shows a few Gannets, with their nests. I like how they have all got their little space.
We did wonder why there were so many Kittiwakes scrabbling about in the grass at the top of the cliff and we found that they were hunting for nest material and then flying with it in their beaks to their chosen site. (The RSPB staff at Bempton are so helpful.)
