Bluebell....

..... time!
Kings wood
I've blipped this wood before, each year it just delights me , bluebells as far as the eye can see. Just a potted history ---
1823 it was known as Sanderstead woods, this may have had a name change due to an error on the ordinance survey map. It covers an area of 147 1/2 acres mainly on flat ground.
1937 it was purchased by Croydon Council under the Green Belt Act, and now is a public open space . Originally it was a hunting area mainly shooting the shooting lodge still remains , now used to house dogs used for security of the wood.
Before the war it was a valuable public woodland but most of the trees were removed by the army during the war. A flying bomb landed in the trees , the shell remaining there for some time.
In 1955/59 a Mr R I Little did a partial excavation and discovered it was the site of a" Romano- British" settlement. Also uncovered was a Cemetery thought to be the only " Child Cemetery "in Surrey.
However it's a beautiful place to walk, even tho' my stroll is curtailed due to mobility. But I love what I was able to do.
Again it had been a gorgeous day , sorry to say it starts to go downhill from Wednesday, so they say! Enjoy why you can hey.

Appreciate .... the lovely bluebells
