Living in the Colonies

We've had a lovely couple of days in Edinburgh and left to come home this morning, via Glasgow and Loch Lomond.

As our younger daughter's flat can't cope with three extra residents Mrs M and I spent the two nights in a lovely little Colony house near Easter Road. Friends of our elder daughter very kindly allowed us to sleep there in their absence.

I'd seen these little rows of houses in a number of places in Edinburgh, built by philanthropic building companies in the latter half of the 19th century for the use of artisans and other skilled working class families.  Just one row of houses between two narrow lanes, downstairs facing one street and upstairs facing the other. This enabled each resident to have their own garden and front door.

Very desirable nowadays, but yours for a £5 deposit when new!
