I wonder why this plate was considered to be worth mending.  Unfortunately now I cannot ask the owner nor can I work out the manufacturer’s mark as the staple goes right through it. 
China was once highly prized and before the invention of epoxy resins for aircraft manufacture during World War II, all adhesives were derived from natural materials and so were soluble in water.  By stapling the pieces together the crockery could withstand being frequently warmed in an oven and washing up in sinks.
