While I was standing on the river bank looking up to see a helicopter it seemed appropriate to take a photo of the unicorn as tomorrow is National Unicorn Day! A clearer image of the unicorn can be found here when it was on the nearer bank two years ago.
A unicorn is a mythological creature resembling a white horse with a single large, pointed spiral horn in the middle of its forehead. Drinking from the horn was considered to give protection from illnesses and narwhal tusks were sold as unicorn horns. Unicorns have been mentioned in ancient myths of different countries and even in one version of the bible although this was an inaccurate translation of the word which most probably meant an ox or powerful wild animal with one horn.. Celts thought that unicorns symbolized grace, purity, strength and freedom. Many images and sculptures are found in Scotland where it is the national symbol and the Royal Coat of Arms had two unicorns supporting a shield until Scotland was united with England in 1603 when one was replaced by the English lion.
