Diner night
A rainy, gloomy day around here and with nothing exciting to cook we decided to take the kids and grandkids to the diner.
New Jersey loves its diners and thank goodness we have them! Diners became a part of the American landscape more than 100 years ago. The dictionary defines a diner as "a restaurant in the shape of a railroad car." Although they don't all look like railroad cars anymore they still have a very simple look.
However, when you are too tired to cook and you want a quick meal that's inexpensive you can't really beat a diner. Diners offer a wide range of food, a very casual atmosphere and are open very late.
My grandson loves to order chocolate chip pancakes which are as big as his plate! My granddaughter was singing jingle bells on the top of her lungs and you know what, it's ok because this is the type of place that has no rules. You can eat breakfast at dinner time, the kids can be noisy and you can take your time and just sit and talk. Nobody rushes you, the waitresses get a kick out of the kids and everybody leaves happy.
