Views, nature and the start of Carnaval

Our trip today should have included a stop at Pico Arreiro, the third highest peak on the island at around 1880 metres. Seriously high on this volcanic island, with sheer drops.

The minibus stopped in a line of traffic as we were nearing the top. Bruno, our driver/guide ran up to see what had happened. Nothing was moving as we were waiting for the mountain rescue team who were on their way.

A tourist, cycling, had gone over the edge. We learned later that he had only (!) fallen 30 metres. He was, of course, seriously injured. The mountain rescue team are wonderful and they are frequently needed. Injuries on the levadas, too, are not so rare. Many tourists set off ill equipped. Just because they’re on holiday, it doesn’t mean they are in a theme park.

Because of the changed itinerary, we had time to do the delightful Levada walk near Ribeiro Frio, “Balcoes”. My blip is taken from the viewpoint, across towards Eagle Rock. Conditions were stunning.

After lunch we joined the fun in Santana where the Carnaval period officially started with the local, basic and homespun, Festa dos Compadres. Worlds away from the Samba procession next week, but huge fun.

My extras try to capture the magic.
